60TH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT: Pirates, Lady Hawks move into title games

Belfry ran out to big first half lead and never looked back in beating Phelps, 77-50, in the 60thDistrict tournament opener played on Monday night.

Eric Daniels led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points as the Pirates moved to 9-22. Noah Brown followed with 17 while Cory Erwin finished with 13.

Phelps’ Mason Prater fired in a game-high 31 points as the Hornets season ended at 6-21. Dawson McCoy tallied nine.

The Pirates will battle top-seeded Pike Central in the championship game on Thursday. Both teams will advance to the 15th Region tournament next week.

Pike Central erased a seven-point halftime deficit and rallied to beat Phelps, 58-51, in the 60thDistrict tournament semifinals on Monday night.

The Lady Hawks, now 14-14, will play top-seeded Belfry in the girls’ championship game on Wednesday. Both have qualified for the 15th Region tournament.

Emalie Tackett poured in 21 points to lead Central. Lindsey Bowman followed with 14 and Abigail Hess added 10.

Caleigh McCoy led the Lady Hornets with 18 points and Kylea Weddington scored 17. Kaylin Slone hit four treys to finish with 12.
