BREAKING NEWS: KHSAA votes to begin basketball season Jan. 4

Practice begins statewide Dec. 14

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSSA) voted 12-5 during its zoom meeting on Thursday to move ahead with the high school basketball season to begin as previously planned on Jan. 4.

Practice across Kentucky will resume on Dec. 14, except for some counties who have shut down everything due to critical COVID-19 conditions. It is not a given everyone will begin on the approved start date.

Board members voted 14-3 in favor of rescheduling the Sweet 16 for a window of March 29-April 8, dates which are available at Rupp Arena.

Members voted against the recommendation of Commissioner Julian Tackett who urged for the start date to be pushed back.

He had asked the dates for the Sweet Sixteen to be moved to April 24-May 9. It failed by a 9-8 vote.

The start of baseball and softball in the spring has not been clarified. They are likely to start the week of spring break.
