HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Belfry rolls past Betsy Layne; Pike Central falls

Belfry broke open a close game with a five-run, third inning and cruised to a 15-5 win over Betsy Layne in a game played at Massey Energy Field on Tuesday.

Steven Banks and Jake Varney each drove in a pair of runs as the Pirates moved to 1-1. Wyatt Webb tripled, singled, scored two runs and knocked in one while Gage Fields added two hits and scored four runs.

Andrew Kidd had two hits, including a double for the Bobcats (0-1). He also scored two runs. Boston Hamilton and Jacob Newsome each had an RBI.

Lawrence County pounded out 12 hits and needed every one of them to beat Johnson Central, 14-11, in a game played at Eagle Field on Tuesday.

Will Lafferty had three hits and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Blue Fletcher collected three hits and walked twice. Jacob Fletcher knocked in a pair of runs.

Ryan Sartin-Slone had four hits in the loss for Johnson Central, now 1-1. Chandler Spradlin drove in two runs.

Central’s Keegan Bentley belted a three-run homer in the loss as the Hawks dropped to 1-1. He finished with four runs batted in.

Prestonsburg made the most of just four hits as the Blackcats doubled up Martin County, 8-4, in a game played at StoneCrest Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Chase Preece had two hits, including a double and scored as Prestonsburg improved to 2-0. Winning pitcher Payton Burke singled and scored two runs. Owen Greene and Wesley Salisbury both scored twice.

Greyden Proctor singled and scored while Dylan Fitch score one run and knocked in another for the Cardinals in their opener.
