HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Hillbillies one win away from state tournament berth; Logan drops Game 1

Man starting pitcher Ryan Cozart struck out eight batters and scattered three hits to lead the Hillbillies to a 4-0 victory over Wahama in the opening game of the Class A, Region IV tournament played at William “Tootie” Carter Field on Monday night.

The win leaves the Hillbillies, now 20-8, just one victory shy of advancing to the state tournament next week in Charleston. The White Falcons dropped to 11-12.

Casey Hurley had an RBI single in the first inning and Man added three unearned runs in the third inning to push the lead to 4-0.

Josh Lambert and Hurley had a pair of hits each and both scored. Caleb Blevins singled and scored.

The series resumes at 6 p.m. tonight at Wahama. If a game three is needed it will be played Wednesday at Man.

Logan nearly erased a five-run deficit against Point Pleasant, but the Big Blacks held on for a 5-4 win in the opening round of the Class AA, Region IV tournament played at Roger Gertz Field on Monday night.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 23-6 while Point Pleasant improved to 21-8. The series resumes tonight in Point Pleasant.

Korbin Bostic singled, walked and scored while Jake Ramey walked twice and had an RBI. Garrett Williamson drove in two runs and Carson Kirk singled and scored.

Chad Burnette was tagged with the loss.
