HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Blackcats, Lady Blackcats off to 2-0 starts

Prestonsburg’s Grant Varney banked home the game-winning shot as time expired on the clock to give the Blackcats a thrilling 63-61 win over Paintsville on the road on Wednesday night.

The win moved the Blackcats, under first year coach Chase Parsley, to 2-0. It was the season opener for the Tigers.

Kaden Allen led the scoring for the Blackcats with 19 points. Brian Halbert followed with 13. Varney finished with seven.

Paintsville’s Connor Fugate led all scorers with 28 points. He grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. James Lauffer added 12.

Floyd Central rallied in the final quarter to get past Belfry, 60-52, in a game played at Jaguar Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Maddi Meade and Kennedy Harvel fired in 18 points each to lead the way, Jada Johnson followed with 10 and Riley Compton added nine.

Karla Stanley paced the Lady Pirates with 17 points and Hope coley scored a baker’s dozen. Jaaliyan Warren tossed in nine.
