HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Belfry escapes Lawrence County to claim district crown

Belfry found itself in a real dog fight against Lawrence County in the Class 3A district title game played at Haywood Stadium on Friday night.

Belfry running back Isaac Dixon rushed for 152 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with less than six minutes remaining to give the Pirates a 21-14 victory.

Pirates defensive back Braxton Hatfield picked off Bulldog quarterback Alex Strickland inside the 20-yard line with 46 seconds left to preserve the win.

Belfry, now 6-6, built a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter on a touchdown run by Hatfield (3 yards) and Caden Woolum’s pass to Cameron Varney (26 yards).

Lawrence County rallied in the second half to pull even at 14-all..

Nick Collinsworth hauled in a 10-yard scoring pass from Strickland in the third period and running back Dylan Ferguson scored on a five-yard run early in the fourth.

Belfry will journey to Log Mountain to face Bell County on Friday night. Kickoff is 7 pm.
