HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Cardinals’ comeback falls short at West Carter

Martin County’s comeback efforts against defending district champion West Carter came up short as the Cardinals dropped a hard-fought 27-19 outcome on the road on Friday night.

The Cardinals, whose season ends at 8-5, trailed 27-7 heading into the final 12 minutes.

Running back Dawson Mills had TD runs of 33 and 43 yards in the first five minutes to pull the Cardinals to within 27-19.

Neither team scored from that point on.

Running back Kolby Sparks tied the game at 7-all on the first play of the second quarter with a one-yard score. Sparks finished with 178 yards on 16 carries and Mills added 94 yards on seven attempts.
