HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Golden Eagles cruise into third round with 24th straight victory

Johnson Central continued its march to reach the Class 4A state championship game for a sixth consecutive season as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 50-0 win over Letcher Central in the district finals played at Eagle Field on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles extended the state’s longest active winning streak to 24 games. The last loss came in the 2018 title game to Franklin Simpson, 14-12. Johnson Central has won 37 of their last 38 games.

Running back and Mr. Football candidate Dylan Preston ran 13 times for 211 yards and three scores as the Golden Eagles rushed for 448 as a team. Mason Lawson added 93 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just nine carries.

Quarterback Grant Rice ran for 90 yards and one score on five attempts and Matt Crum added a rushing touchdown.

Johnson Central’s defense held the Cougars (6-2) to only 80 total yards. Jacob Price picked off a pair of passes and Reece Goss had a third pick. Both LCC losses came at the hands of Johnson Central.

The Golden Eagles will now host Corbin (8-1) in the regional championship game at Eagle Field on Dec. 4.
