HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Pirates dominate in thrashing of Bobcats to reach Class 3A semifinals

Defending champion Belfry arguably played its most complete game on both sides of the football this season and the end result was a dominating 42-0 win over Bell County in a rematch of last year’s Class 3A title game played on a rain-soaked Curry/Carroll Field on Friday night.

The Pirates, now 7-3, scored just 14 seconds into the game when Seth Mounts delivered a bone-jarring tackle on Bobcat running back Dawson Woolum, knocking the ball loose which Isaac Dixon scooped up and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

Belfry never looked back in earning a ticket to next Friday night’s semifinal showdown on the road with Ashland Blazer (9-0).

Dixon, a Mr. Football candidate was electrifying, with 204 yards and three rushing touchdowns on just eight carries, all coming in the first half. He had TD runs of 70, 56 and 37 yards. Dixon now has 1,609 yards and 30 touchdowns on just 107 rushing attempts.

Running backs Brayden Rash and Mounts added rushing touchdowns.

Bell County was playing on Pond Creek for the first time since 1998 at historic Vipperman Stadium. The Pirates edged the Bobcats in a classic, 14-13.
