HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Letcher, Knott counties in red zone; Floyd County teams affected

Athletics in Letcher and Knott counties remain up in the air because of COVID restrictions.

The latest incidence map shows Letcher’s numbers as 31.8 and Knott at 26.1. They are two of 24 counties across the state in the red zone.

Letcher Central soccer teams are in action this week. Status of other sports activities has not been confirmed.

Red indicates critical levels with at least 25 cases per 100,000 people.

Pike, Floyd, Martin, Magoffin, Johnson, and Lawrence counties are all under gold status, which is accelerated cases numbering from 10-25 per 100,000.

Betsy Layne athletics remains on hold following COVID cases. This coming Friday night’s home game against Paintsville has been canceled. The Bobcats have sidelined since the beginning of the month.

Also, Floyd Central High School halted extra and co-curricular activities for Tuesday. The board of education is monitoring the situation and will decide soon on the remainder of the week after a staff member there tested positive.
