HS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Phelps tops Hurley; Pikeville girls bounce PCC

Phelps bounced back from Monday night’s season opening loss to knock off Hurley (Va.), 57-36, in a game played at the McCoy Athletic Center on Tuesday night.

Trey Francis poured in a team-high 16 points and  Dawson McCoy followed with nine as Phelps moved to 1-1. Jaylen Wells tossed in eight.

Jonathan Hurley paced the Rebels (0-1) with a game-high 18 points.

Lawrence County erupted for 32 points in the game’s first eight minutes and the Bulldogs went on to beat East Carter, 83-70, in the season opener played on the road in Grayson on Tuesday night.

Tyler Maynard poured in a game-high 28 points and Trenton Adkins followed with 14. Cody Maynard added 14 and Chase Sartin tallied 11.

Hunter Binion led the Raiders with 19 points.

Kent Damron led the Patriots with 21 points.

Phelps’ Trey Francis tossed in a game-high 22 points in the loss. Dominick Francis finished with 14.

Defending 15th Region champion Pikeville built a double-digit halftime lead and went on to beat Pike County Central, 70-45, in the season opener for the Lady Panthers at T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Kirsten Cole Williamson finished with a game-high 16 points and Alivia Gearheart tossed in 14 to lead the way.

Kelsi Brinager paced the Lady Hawks (0-2) with 14 points. She was the only Central player in double figures.
