PIKEVILLE – Lawrence County’s Trenton Adkins completed a three-point play the old fashion way to rescue the Bulldogs, who held on to beat Shelby Valley, 63-61 in the boys’ 15th Region Tournament semifinals at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
The Wildcats, who finished the season 25-8, had taken at 61-60 lead on Kaden Robinson’s two free throws with 31.9 remaining. Valley erased a 14-point, third-quarter deficit.
Keian Worrix had a last-second trey which could have won the game for the Wildcats.
Cody Potter, playing in his final game, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Robinson tossed in 15 while Zack Johnson and Worrix followed with 11 each.
Cody Maynard led the Bulldogs, now 22-11, with 21 points and Tyler Maynard tossed in 18. Adkins finished with 13 but none bigger than his 3-point play with four seconds left.
Lawrence County and Martin County will clash at 7 p.m. Monday night for the regional championship and a berth in the Sweet 16 in Lexington.
