15TH REGION TOURNAMENT: Valley Cats escape Hornets to advance

PIKEVILLE – Phelps was prepared to challenge Shelby Valley for a berth in the boys 15th Region Tournament semifinals.

The Hornets, who saw their season end at 21-11, trailed by just a single point heading into the final quarter before the Wildcats pulled away for a 69-53 win in a game which was much closer than the score ended.

Cody Potter finished with 24 points and Keian Worrix followed with 22 as Valley improved to 25-7 and punched their ticket to Saturday’s semifinals against Lawrence County (21-11).

Trey Francis was outstanding in the final game as a Hornet, scoring a game-high 27 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive glass. His final made free throw of the game gave him 2,000 career points.

Dominick Francis followed with 11 and Jason Casey chipped in nine.
