HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Betsy Layne, Martin County claim district titles

Betsy Layne held off Lawrence County down the stretch to score a thrilling 67-64 win in the 58th District boys’ championship game played at Floyd Central on Friday night.

The victory earned the Bobcats, now 22-7, the No. 1 seed heading into the 15th Region tournament. The Bulldogs (24-7) advance as the runner up.

Andrew Kidd poured in 23 points and Jordan Frazier followed with 17. Chase Mims added 11.

Cody Maynard fired in a game-high 28 points for the Bulldogs. Trenton Adkins and Andrew Bloomfield added 13 each.

Martin County used a dominate third period to take the lead away from Paintsville and the Cardinals rolled to a 66-47 win in the 57th District tournament championship game at Eagle Fieldhouse on Friday night.

Brady Dingess led a trio of Cardinals in double figures with 27 points. Luke Hale tallied 18 and Jordan Dalton added 13 as the Cardinals improved to 23-7.

Connor Fugate paced the Tigers (19-8) with 15 points and Colby Fugate added 13.

At Paintsville
