Belfry’s Jake Varney singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Pirates to a dramatic 8-7 win over Martin County in the 15th Region Leadoff Classic game played at Betsy Layne on Tuesday night.
The Pirates had built a 6-0 lead before the Cardinals rallied to tie the game with six runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by Chase Moore’s three-run homer.
Losing pitcher Chase Stacy and Dawson Mills added RBI singles.
Steven Banks doubled, scored, and batted in three for Belfry. Isaiah Stanley had three hits, including a double, and added an RBI. Varney added two hits and finished with a pair of runs batted in.
Tyler Slone was the winning pitcher.

Belfry made quick work of Jenkins as the Lady Pirates opened the season with a 16-0 win over the Lady Cavaliers in three innings at Massey Energy Field on Tuesday.
Winning pitcher Molly Fahm did not allow a hit and walked just one batter.
Natalie Fite had two hits, including a triple, walked, scored three runs, and drove in four. Isabella Howard had a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and batted in two while Linzee Phillips singled, walked twice, scored three runs an added an RBI. Zoey Caudill, Myra Blevins, and Cameron Childers each drove in a run.

Pike County Central pitcher Chloe Hannah helped her own cause with a three-run homer as the Lady Hawks rolled to an 11-1 win over Leslie County in the season opener played at the Hawks Nest on Tuesday.
