COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UPIKE women top BSC

PIKEVILLEThe University of Pikeville women’s basketball Bears held NCAA D-II Bluefield State to eight total points in the second half to rally for their sixth straight win at the UPIKE Gymnasium on Wednesday, 48-32.

Thirty-two points allowed ties the fewest by a UPIKE team since the Bears surrendered just 22 points in January of 2006 against Knoxville College.

Pikeville held BSC to just 25 percent shooting from the field and 7.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Brianna Burbridge provided the offensive spark for the Bears off the bench in the second platoon unit. She scored a game-high 17 points and came a rebound away from a double-double in the third straight game.

UPIKE didn’t get its first lead until the third quarter, but by that point, its defense was all the Bears needed.

UPIKE, now 12-4 overall, went on an 19-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Bears outscore Bluefield State 29-8 in the second half.

The Bears resume conference play when they travel to face Georgetown on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
