Pikeville rallied from 11 points down to close to within four late in the final quarter, but number four Marshall County held on to beat the Lady Panthers, 56-52, in the girls’ Sweet 16 quarterfinals played at Rupp Arena Thursday afternoon.
Pikeville, which saw its season end at 25-6, was playing in their third straight Sweet 16.
The Lady Panthers had seven more total field goals than the Lady Marshals but lost the game at the free throw line. Pikeville was whistled for 23 team fouls to just nine calls against Marshall County.
The Lady Marshals attempted 34 free throws, hitting 20, while Pikeville hit five of eight. The Lady Panthers were never in the bonus.
Trinity Rowe finished with 18 points. She also had seven assists. Kenzie Maynard, playing in her final game, scored 12 and grabbed eight boards.
