HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Panthers hold off Dawgs; Cards edge Pirates

The Pikeville Panthers built a 19-point lead in the second quarter against Lawrence County and then held off the Bulldogs late to escape with a 63-57 win in the opening round of the boys’ 15th Region basketball tournament played at the Appalachian Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.

Nick Robinson led Pons finished with 15 points and Laithan Hall added 11 in the win.

Cody Maynard scored a game-high 20 points in the loss. Kaden Gillispie added 14 and Trenton Adkins tossed in 12.

The Bulldogs season ends at 24-8.

In the opener, Martin County’s Brady Dingess poured in 24 points to power the Cardinals to a hard-fought 53-49 victory over Belfry.

Luke Hale finished with 13 and Jordan Dalton tallied 11 as the Cardinals moved to 24-7.

Belfry’s Sal Dean had a game-high 25 points in the loss as the Pirates end the season at 14-12. Bol Kuir had eight points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

Pikeville and Martin County will meet in the semifinals set for Saturday night.
