HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pikeville wins two at Ashland Invitational

The Pikeville Panthers were one defensive stop away from more than likely playing for Ashland Invitational Tournament championship.

Pikeville lost to state power Bowling Green on a last-second shot while bouncing back to beat Teays Valley and Boyd County.

Pikeville used a solid second-half performance to rally and beat Boyd County, 65-58, in the fifth-place game of the Ashland Invitational Tournament played on Thursday.

Rylee Samons paced three Panthers in double figures with 20 points. Nick Robinson followed with 19 and Health Jarrell added 11 as Pikeville moved to 10-1.

Pikeville snaped a 60-all tie, outscoring Teays Valley Christian down the stretch to earn a 72-62 win in the Ashland Invitational Tournament played on Wednesday.

Nick Robinson led the way with 24 points as the Panthers moved to 9-1. Rylee Samons scored 19 and Laithan Hall added 10. Tate Walters and Keian Worrix net eight each.

Pikeville’s eight-game winning streak to start the season ended as Bowling Green hit a three-point basket as time expired to beat the Panthers, 62-61, in the opening round of the Ashland Invitational Tournament on Tuesday.

Nick Robinson finished with 19 points for the Panthers while Keian Worrix and Laithan Hall added 11 each.
