HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pirates, Lady Hawks reach 60th finals; Warriors, Lady Kats advance

Belfry closed out the first half on a 17-0 run and the Pirates went on to knock off Phelps, 63-46, in the 60th District Tournament game played at the McCoy Athletic Center on Tuesday night.

DeMahjae Clark led the Pirates with a game-high 25 points and Sal Dean added 15 as Belfry, now 14-10, advanced to the championship game against Pike County Central on Thursday night.

Melvin McCoy tallied 19 points and Mason Prater finished with 16 in the loss.

Phelps’ season ends at 10-18.

Pike County Central’s defensive pressure wore down Phelps and the Lady Hawks went on to punch their ticket to the 60th District championship game with a 72-26 win in a game played at McCoy Athletic Center on Tuesday night.

Hannah May led a trio of Central (12-16) players in scoring with 19 points. Emalie Tackett finished with 16 and Chloe Hannah added 10.

Phelps’ Amelia Casey led all scorers with 21 points as the Lady Hornets season ends at 12-17.

The Lady Hawks will face Belfry in the title game on Thursday night.

East Ridge took control in the second period and went on to bounce Shelby Valley, 60-41, in the 59th District Tournament game played at the Shelby Valley Sports Center on Tuesday night.

Jonathon Mills and Isaac Woods paced the Warriors, now 16-14, with 14 points apiece. Eli Sykes added 12 as East Ridge advances to the championship game against Pikeville on Thursday night.

Russ Osborne scored 13 in the loss for the Wildcats, who finished the season at 16-10.

Cassidy Rowe fired in 20 points and Alyssa Elswick added 17 as the Lady Kats (22-8) advanced to the championship game against Pikeville on Thursday night.

Lindsey Rose had nine points in the loss as the Lady Cavaliers finished 9-22.

Lawrence County’s high-octane offense was on full display as the Bulldogs steamrolled Prestonsburg, 91-61, in the 58th District Tournament matchup played at Floyd Central High School on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs, now 24-6, will move on to the finals to face the Betsy Layne and Floyd Central winner.

Cody Maynard led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points and Andrew Bloomfield followed with 18. Kaden Gillispie tossed in 16.

Jacob Slone paced the Blackcats, who ended the year at 5-23, with 20 points. Brian Halbert chipped in nine.
