HIGH SCHOOL: Clock ticking down on governor’s decision

The fate of high school sports in Kentucky is squarely on the shoulders of Gov. Andy Beshear as the clock is winding down on his decision.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control members approved for practice to begin Monday, pending the approval of the governor and state health officials.

Gov. Beshear said this past week he was surprised by the 16-2 vote to move ahead with sports. Board members said during the special call meeting last Thursday coaches and athletic directors favored starting Monday.

Under the proposal, volleyball and soccer games would begin on Sept. 7, with football set to kickoff Sept. 11.

Gov. Beshear’s son played on a traveling baseball team throughout the summer, adding mounted pressure to his decision.

Schools in West Virginia, except for Logan County, are moving into the second week of practice.
