HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Cardinals outscore Hornets in opener

Martin County had to rally twice to knock off  Phelps, 52-40, in a wild season opener played at Marty Casey Stadium on Friday night.

Cardinal running back Kolby Sparks rushed 15 times for 242 yards and two touchdowns while teammate Logan Proctor ran 20 times for 149 yards and a pair of scores. Proctor hauled in one pass for 15 yards. He also recovered a fumble.

Quarterback Charles Bowen had 30 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns and Branson Smith finished with 63 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

Phelps quarterback Dominick Francis ran 11 times for 126 yards and a pair of scores and passed for 156 yards to two other touchdowns.

Seth Mayhorn carried seven times for 52 yards and a touchdown. He also hauled in a touchdown pass. Cainan Land had three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Steve Layne returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown.

Phelps (0-1) will host Shelby Valley (1-0) and Martin County (1-0) visits Magoffin County (1-0) on Sept. 18.
