HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Knuckles late TD lifts Hawks past Cards

Pike County Central failed to capitalize on two previous Martin County turnovers.

The Hawks made sure a third chance wouldn’t slip past them.

Quarterback Jamere Knuckles scored on a two-yard run with four minutes, 20 seconds remaining to lift the Hawks to a 9-6 win in the Pike County Bowl matchup played at Haywood Stadium in Goody on Friday night.

Knuckles rushed 20 times for 130 yards as Central improved to 2-0.

It was Pike Central’s first bowl win since 2017.

Pike Central took a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter on Stevie Gonzalez-Santes’ 42-yard field goal.

Martin County took a 6-3 lead in the second period on running back Brock Messer’s 11-yard run.

Both teams are back in action this coming weekend as the Hawks will host Harlan (1-1) and the Cardinals (1-1) travel to Shelby Valley. Both games are set for 7:30 pm, Sept. 1.
