Pikeville and Russellville, the two teams who clashed for the Class 1A state football championship one year ago, met in a rematch at Somerset on Saturday afternoon.

This one was decided quickly as Pikeville’s Logan Reed took the opening kickoff back 73 yards for a score and the defending champions cruised to a 42-7 victory.

Running back Blake Birchfield had 112 yards and three touchdowns on just four, first half carries as Pikeville moved to 6-2.

Quarterback Isaac Duty passed for 145 yards and tossed TD passes to Tayvion Boykins and Jeb Wilkerson.

Pikeville will host Hazard in a big district showdown on Friday. Kickoff from Hillard Howard Field is 7:30 p.m.
