HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Prayer vigil held for hospitalized JC’s Matney

Johnson Central High School held a prayer vigil at Eagle Field on Sunday afternoon for hospitalized head coach Jim Matney.

Mountain Top Sports has confirmed the veteran coach was transferred from Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa to Cabell Huntington Hospital Saturday evening, during which time he suffered a life-threatening medical issue.

Mountain Top Sports will follow this developing story and provide updates as they are released.

Matney, a Belfry High School graduate, is the most successful coach in Golden Eagle history. He took over the program in 2004, after coaching at then Sheldon Clark.

Matney guided the program to state championships in 2016 and 2019, earning a fifth straight trip to the finals in the win over Boyle County in their latest appearance.
