HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Rams kick last-second FG to beat Tigers, 23-20

Raceland has made it a habit of knocking off top-ranked teams on the turf at Rams Stadium.

It happened again on Friday night.

Ram placekicker Peyton Ison booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired on the clock to beat Paintsville, 23-20.

Three years prior kicker Luke Lemaster beat Pikeville in the state semifinals on a last-second field goal, to reach its first state tournament appearance.

Paintsville, now 5-1, took an early 13-0 lead in the opening half on Luke Hyden’s 33-yard interception return and running back Harris Phelps’ one-yard run. Harris finished with 118 yards on 17 carries.

Luke Hyden’s 10-yard run early in the fourth period helped the Tigers regain the lead at 20-13.

Quarterback Jake Hyden passed for 133 yards in the loss.

Paintsville will journey to Lexington Christian (6-1) on Oct. 30. Kickoff is 7:30pm.
