Governor will not overturn KHSAA’s decision
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he was not going to overturn the KHSAA’s decision to begin high school practice today and the start of games on Sept. 7.
“It’s not because I think it’s a good decision or a wise decision,” he said. “Every decision can’t be mine.”
Gov. Beshear would like to see athletes tested three times weekly and would continue to monitor the situation closely as teams move forward.
He added by starting sports added responsibility will fall on local school boards, superintendent and coaches to enforce strict guidelines.
Football, volleyball and soccer fall under high risk sports because of contact, which is limiting the number of hours practice can be held.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control members approved for practice to begin today, pending the approval of the governor and state health officials.
Gov. Beshear said this past week he was surprised by the 16-2 vote to move ahead with sports. Board members said during the special call meeting last Thursday coaches and athletic directors favored starting today.
