HIGH SCHOOL: Governor-appointed KDE could halt fall sports

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was troubled by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control ruling to allow practice to begin across the state.

Gov. Beshear, whose son is a member of a travel baseball team, did not overturn the ruling but now the 11-member Kentucky Department of Education, appointed by his office, has scheduled a virtual teleconference to discuss the future of fall sports.

The KHSAA, which is an agent of the KDE to manage interscholastic athletics, had voted 16-2 to approve starting high-contract sports but education officials may ask to delay the start of games.

Among items on the agenda is the discussion and possible action to authorize the board to develop written communication to be issued, urging additional consideration of alternative options for sports.

Practice began Monday with fall sports set to begin on Labor Day.
