HS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Golden Eagles escape Bobcats

PIKEVILLE – Johnson Central took the lead away from Betsy Layne late in the second half and held on for a 63-59 victory in a game played at the Appalachian Wireless Arena on Saturday.

Cory VanHoose finished with a game-high 24 points as the Golden Eagles improved to 8-6. Grant Rice followed with 10 and Isaiah May chipped in nine.

Betsy Layne, now 9-6, was led by Brady Robinson’s 16 points and Jordan Frazier followed with 14. Chase Mims tallied 11 and Jake Rainey tossed in eight.

PAINTSVILLE – Paintsville and Johnson Central battled right to the wire before the Tigers earned a thrilling 62-60 win in a game played on Friday.

Colby Fugate fired in 23 points and lead four Tigers (5-8) while Braxton Tharp followed with 14 while Nick Keeton added 12 and pulled down nine rebounds. Baron Ratliff netted 11 in the win.

Cory VanHoose netted a game-high 25 points for the Golden Eagles, now 7-6. Connor Lemaster tallied 13 while Isaiah May and Kamen Slone tossed in nine each. May had 10 rebounds.
