HS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Pikeville, Valley split doubleheader

PIKEVILLE – Shelby Valley held on down the stretch to score a 63-59 victory over Pikeville in a district game played at T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday.

Valley’s Cody Potter fired in 27 points and Kaden Robinson added 23 as the Wildcats improved to 10-3. Keian Worrix added 12.

Grayson Harris paced the Panthers, now 6-5, with 23 points and Laithan Hall followed with 16.

Aden Barnett fired in 32 points to lead four Hornets (7-4) in double figure scoring. Isaiah Salyer tossed in 18 while Randy Bailey followed with 16 and Grayson Whitaker added 13.

Andrew Kidd tossed in 16 to lead the Bobcats, now 9-4. Jordan Frazier finished with 15 and Chase Mims tallied 12.

BECKLEY – Two-time defending Class AA championship Chapmanville slowly pulled away to knock off Bluefield, 60-50, in the New River Shootout showdown between two of the top-Class AA programs on Saturday.

Obinna Anochili-Killen led the Tigers, now 7-1, with 21 points while Phillip Mullins tossed in 20 and Andrew Shull netted 14.

Chapmanville has now won 48 straight games against in-state opponents.

PIKEVILLE – Pikeville’s Kirsten Cole-Williamson made a pair of free throws with one second remaining to rally the Lady Panthers to a 54-53 district win over Shelby Valley in a game played at T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers, now 8-3, rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to win. Cole-Williamson paced Pikeville with 20 points. Kelsey Jo Tackett tallied 11 and Alivia Gearheart tossed in eight.

Alyssa Elswick led the Lady Cats (7-5) with 20 points. Zoee Johnson added nine and Alyssa Newsom hit for eight.

Jordan Frazier paced Betsy Layne, now 9-3, with 20 points. Chase Mims tallied 14 and  Robinson added 13.

Gunnur Williams led all scorers with 22 points for the Blackcats,  now 6-5. Graham Burchett hit for 14 while Ryan Rose added 11 and Adam Slone tossed in 10.

Mingo Central was led by Drew Hatfield’s 22 points for the Miners now 3-2. Devin Hatfield tossed in 10.
