HS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Rigdon’s buzzer-beater lifts Hawks; Cougars nip Lee County

Pike County Central’s Jaylon Rigdon scored the game-winning basket as time expired on the clock to lift the Hawks to a thrilling 55-54 win over Magoffin County in the season opener played at the Hawks Nest on Tuesday night.

Rigdon finished with a game-high 20 points and Josh Du Toit  followed with 17.

Aden Barnett paced the Hornets with 17 points and Ben Lafferty added 15.

Letcher Central landed three players in double-figure scoring and the Cougars held off Lee County, 76-72, in a game played at LCCHS Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Bodie Bentley poured in a team-high 28 points as the Cougars moved to 1-1. Joby Johnson and Nigel Nichols followed with 14 each.

Belfry took the lead away from Prestonsburg in the second period and the Pirates went on to beat the Blackcats, 83-62, in the season opener played at Prestonsburg Field House on Tuesday night.

Tyler Chaffin led four Pirates in double figure scoring with a game-high 22 points. Tyler Chaffin followed with 20 while Bol Kuir finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double. Ben McNamee tossed in 17.

Ryan Rose led the Blackcats with 18 points and Will Gullett scored 10.

The Bobcats landed four players in double figures as Chase Mims and Brady Robinson led the way with 18 points each. Jordan Frazier and Nichols followed with 12 each.
