Lady Cardinals take 15th Region All A championship, next stop Owensboro

The Martin County Lady Cardinals girls’ basketball team have taken home the 15 Region All A title and will now move on to Owensboro for the All A state tournament.

This is head coach Robin Newsome’s eighth regional crown as Martin County High School’s head coach.

“Not sure anyone picked us to do this, after graduating four four-year starters, but I’ll sure take it,” Newsome said. “God blessed us. I’m so proud of our kids. They fought so hard and played their hearts out. It’s been a very emotional season for our team, school, and community. The kids really wanted to win this for Kennadi.”

The Cardinals defeated the Betsy Layne lady Bobcats to claim the champion at the Appalachian Wireless Arena on January 16 by a final tally of 41-40. Freshman Maci Maynard earned the Community Trust Player of the Game finishing with 18 points while point guard Brooke Marcum chipped in 13 points in the win.

“This group is finding their way and just coming into their own. This was a total team effort,” Newsome continued. “The only starter we have returning is Brooke Marcum. We have a lot of talented players taking advantage of their opportunity and stepping up to make big plays when we need them. Just so happy for our players, fans, and the school.”
