PIKEVILLE – Pikeville captured its second straight 15th Region basketball championship. Letcher Central made its way through the 14th Region field to a title.
Both advanced to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament. The two eastern Kentucky programs finished 1-2 in the final Mountain Top Sports girls’ Super 7 basketball poll released on Thursday.
The Panthers finished 26-8, falling in the opening round of the state tournament to Casey County while the Cougars season ended at 25-11. LCC was beat by defending champion Ryle.
Shelby Valley (22-9) claimed the number three spot, just ahead of Floyd Central and Martin County tied for fourth. The Lady Jaguars were 20-9 while the Lady Cardinals finished 21-10.
Mingo Central, with a record of 17-6, finished sixth, followed by Lawrence County (19-14) and Belfry (16-15) who shared the number seven position.
Receiving votes were Chapmanville (16-7), Johnson Central (16-15), Phelps (18-12) and Tug Valley (18-8).
