HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Paintsville, Prestonsburg earn opening-day wins

Paintsville’s Zach Taylor pitched four innings of one-hit baseball to help the Tigers open the season with a 4-0 win over Elmwood, Ohio in the Cal Ripken Experience played at Myrtle Beach on Monday.

Cory Jefferson, Zach Taylor, and Ashton Miller all had RBI singles. Grayson Peter added an RBI. Harris Phelps singled and scored.

Prestonsburg’s Payton Burke had three hits, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Blackcats to a 16-1 win over Jenkins in a game played at StoneCrest Sports Complex on Monday.

Brayden Slone added two hits, scored three runs, and drove in two while Owen Greene had two hits and batted in one run while scoring twice. Bryce Ousley added two hits.

Matt Welch was the winning pitcher.

Johnson Central pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Breathitt County, 7-6, in the season opener played on Monday night.

Brock Butcher had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs and Chandler Spradlin doubled in one run and scored. Matt Crum added two hits and scored.

Winning pitcher Ryan Sartin-Slone helped his own cause with one hit, two runs scored and added an RBI.

Lawrence County pitcher Tallon Pollock tossed a one-hit shutout as the Bulldogs opened the season with a 9-0 win at home over Belfry in a game played on Monday night.

The Bulldogs used a six-run, second inning to break the game open.

Brayden Maynard had two hits, including a double, scored three runs and drove in two while Bryce Adkins doubled, singled, and batted in two runs.

Abner Collinsworth had two hits, one a double, and knocked in two runs and Nick Collinsworth singled twice and scored two runs.

Bryce Adkins had two hits and drove in one run while Zac Crum added two singles and two runs batted in. Caleb Mouton doubled, singled an added an RBI.

Steven Layne singled home ne run for the Hornets.

Cameron Kimbler was the winning pitcher while Melvin McCoy was tagged with the loss.
