HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Blackcats slip past Hornets

Prestonsburg running back Carter Akers scored with less than two minutes remaining to help the Blackcats turn back short-handed Phelps, 12-8, in a game played at Josh Francis Memorial Field on Friday night.

The game was originally scheduled as a home game for the Hornets, now 0-3, but was moved because of extremely wet field conditions at Marty Casey Stadium.

Phelps played without starting quarterback Steven Layne who was out with a knee injury. His return to the field remains up in the air.

Akers paced the Blackcats, now 1-2, with 150 yards rushing on 26 carries.

Bryson Locklear, who shared quarterback duties with Cainan Land, tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Corey Turnmire, then ran in the conversion. He finished with 93 yards on the ground.
