Johnson Central returned to the football field for the first time since head coach Jim Matney was hospitalized with serious medical issues.
The Golden Eagles carried their emotions on their sleeves as they rallied to tie the game late in regulation and then running back Carter Conley’s five-yard score in overtime won it, 42-36, over a very talented Cahokia (IL) team at Eagle Field on Saturday afternoon.
Carter, who had 59 yards and three touchdowns, scored with 1 minute, 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter to pull the Golden Eales (3-1) within two. Matt Crum’s conversion run tied the game. Crum had six rushes for 48 yards.
Jacob Cain also hauled in a 65-yard scoring pass play.
Running back Mason Lawson ran for 185 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries before leaving the game with an injury. Running back Zack McCoart added a touchdown run.
