Director of Athletics Kelly Wells announced the hiring of Bernadette Haney as the Head Coach of UPIKE’s men’s and women’s swimming programs on Monday morning. The Pikeville College graduate assumes the position effective immediately.
Haney, a Paintsville, Ky. native brings 17 years of coaching experience. Currently serving as the Principal at Our Lady of the Mountain school in Paintsville, Haney is an experienced educator and beloved community member. In addition, she’s versed in the sport of swimming, spending almost two decades coaching club swim teams for Paintsville and the surrounding counties.
“We are excited to welcome Mrs. Haney to our UPIKE family,” said Wells, “she has helped facilitate the growth of the sport in the area and has been a passionate educator for young adults in the region.”
Haney’s history at UPIKE dates back to the late 1970s, when she joined the women’s basketball program at Pikeville College. Haney was a three-year member of the program, amassing over 1,100 points and ending her career with the second highest career point total in program history. She also garnered two All-KIAC selections during her playing career.
In 1999, Haney was inducted into the UPIKE Athletics Hall of Fame.
She inherits a roster of 15 student-athletes, complete with several new faces to the program. The 2022-23 UPIKE swimming schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
