HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pikeville boys, girls roll in 59th openers; Lady Tigers rally past JC

State-ranked Pikeville took control in the early going against Jenkins and cruised to an 88-21 win in the opening round of the 59th District Tournament being played at the Shelby Valley Sports Center on Monday night.

Rylee Samons and Heath Jarrell led the way for the Panthers, now 27-2, with 15 points each. Laithan Hall tossed in 11 and Lukas Manns came off the bench to add 10. Keian Worrix net nine.

Austin Johnson had 14 points for the Cavaliers, who finished the season at 7-22.

Pikeville moves on to the championship game to face the winner between Shelby Valley and East Ridge. Both the winner and runner-up play in the 15th Region Tournament next week.

The Pikeville Lady Panthers charged out to a commanding first-quarter lead against East Ridge and went on to score a 77-15 win in the opening round of the 59th District Tournament being played at the Shelby Valley Sports Center on Monday night.

Trinity Rowe scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the first half as the Lady Panthers moved to 27-2. Emma Ratliff followed with 16 and Kyera Thornsbury added nine.

Leah Wells had seven for the Lady Warriors, who finished the year at 4-25.

Pikeville advances to the title game against the winner of Shelby Valley and Jenkins. Both the winner and runner-up play in the 15th Region Tournament next week.

Paintsville overcame a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes and then survived a game-winning shot in the final seconds to escape cross-town rival Johnson Central, 57-56, in the opening round of the 57th District Tournament played at Eagle Fieldhouse on Monday night.

It was the Lady Tigers (18-11) third win this season over the Lady Eagles, who saw their season end at 6-20.

Ava Hyden led four Paintsville players in double-figure scoring with 16 points. Camryn Helton finished with 14 while Emilea Preece added 13 and Kylie Kinner tallied 11.

Clara Blair paced Johnson Central with 14 points and Becca Wright added 11, all in the final quarter.

Paintsville now advances to the championship game against Martin County. Both teams have earned a berth in next week’s 15th Region field.
