Pikeville wasn’t about to let a late lead against Harlan slip away again.
Rylee Samons and Eli Johnson combined to score 51 points and powered the Panthers to a 76-63 victory over the previously unbeaten Dragons in the championship game of the Pikeville Invitational Tournament played at T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Samons, who was voted tournament MVP, poured in 29 points and Johnson finished with 22 as Pikeville improved to 5-2, avenging an earlier home loss to Harlan, now 9-1.
Charlie Fitzer added 12 points in the win.

Pikeville held off a furious fourth quarter rally from Perry Central to advance to the championship game with a 74-70 win on Wednesday.
Rylee Samons paced three Panthers in double figure scoring with 26 points. Charlie Fitzer followed with 23 and Heath Jarrell tallied 15. Josh Hughes tossed in eight.

Pikeville ran out to a big lead in the early going against flu riddled Teays Valley and the Panthers scored a 78-30 win over the Lions in the opening round played on Tuesday.
Rylee Samons stripped the nets for a game-high 35 points, including 11 made three-point goals. Heath Jarrell tallied nine.
