HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Turnover-pronged Belfry escapes Lawrence County

Belfry overcame four turnovers, including three fumbles, to edge Lawrence County, 14-6, in a key district game played at Haywood Stadium on Friday night.

The victory puts the Pirates, now 4-3, in the driver’s week. The Bulldogs fell to 4-2.

Running back Dre Young scored on a 21-yard run early in the second quarter to put the Pirates ahead for good. Caden Woolum hauled in a 47-yard TD pass from quarterback Chase Varney to push the lead to 14-0 at the break. 

The Pirates amassed 299 total yards of offense on the night on 50 plays, including 218 yards rushing on 38 carries. Woolum had five carries for 69 yards, JJ Austin had 16 carries for 68 yards, and Young ran eight carries for 63 yards and a score,.

Varney, who was seeing his first action under in a month, completed 8-12 passes for 81 yards and one TD.

Running back Cody Crum scored on a four-yard run for the Bulldogs. 

Belfry is idle this week before playing at Estill County (3-3) on Oct. 13. The Bulldogs will visit Powell County (1-5) on Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
