HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Belfry boys beat Lawrence County in 2A, Section 8 title match

Belfry overcame an early one-goal deficit to defeat Lawrence County, 2-1, in the Kentucky 2A, Section 8 championship match played at Massey Energy Soccer Complex on Saturday. 

Tucker Slone’s goal off an assist by Isaac Elia in the 65th minute put the Pirates ahead. Aidan McCoy tied the match 1-all with an unassisted goal at the 35-minute mark. 

Lawrence County’s Sawyer Crum gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. 

The Pirates won despite just three total shots on goal. Makaden Maynard stopped 19 shots in the win. The Bulldogs took 25 shots. 

Belfry will host Corbin on Thursday night as the tournament continues.

Pikeville………………1 

South Laurel held off Pikeville down the stretch to beat the Panthers, 2-1, in a match played at StoneCrest on Saturday. 

Cade Weatherford had the lone goal for the Panthers. 

GIRLS 

Lawrence County….4 

Belfry……………………1 

Lawrence County built a three-goal lead and went on to beat Belfry, 4-1, in a match played at Massey Energy Soccer Complex on Saturday. 

Maggie Johnson scored a pair of goals for the Lady Bulldogs. Leandra Curnutte and Taylor Russell added one each. 

Belfry’s lone goal came off the foot of Myra Bevins. 

Goalkeeper Jazzy Cline had 12 saves in the loss as Lawrence County attempted 20 shots on goal. 

Huntington…….5 

Martin County….0 

Martin County struggled attacking the Huntington defense as the Lady Cardinals fell 5-0 in a match played on Saturday. 

Goalkeeper Marlie Fletcher stopped 10 shots in the loss.
