Johnson Central outscored Prestonsburg 4-2 on penalty kicks to score a 2-1 win and captured the girls’ 15th Region tournament championship in a match played at Massey Energy Soccer Complex in Belfry on Thursday night.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie and there was no scoring in the second half or the two, five-minute overtime periods.
The penalty kick phase of the match does not count for or against player records.
Defending champion Prestonsburg, which saw its season end at 19-2, took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of play on a goal by Sophie Stephens. It came off an assist by Anna Burchett.
The Lady Eagles (10-6-3) knotted the match at 1-1 in the 33rd minute on Hayley Lykins’ unassisted goal.
Goalkeeper Cara Blair had 11 saves as Prestonsburg took 13 shots on goal. The Lady Eagles only had six shots. Lindsey Stratton stopped five for the Lady Blackcats.
