COLLEGE SPORTS: UPIKE staying healthy at sports


Attendance Limitations:
NO visiting team attendance
Pre-approved, immediate family player/coach requests
Limited campus ID’s (pending facilities)
All games streamed live – UPIKE Sports Network

Competitions Procedures (Required):

  • Temperature Screening: Temperature under 100.4
  • Social Distancing
  • Masks on at all times (exception is active, IN-GAME athletes)
  • Frequent sanitizing of hands and equipment

UPIKE Athletics COVID Decision Making:

Until testing can be acquired:
Combined percentage of positive and quarantined individuals:

  • Green– 0-10%
  • Orange– 10-15%
  • Red– >15%

Decisions to alter or halt practice and competition will be based on the following scenarios:

  • Green– Team continues with normal practice and competition
  • Orange– Team must proceed with caution and enhance COVID-19 prevention (alter practice and meeting schedule (smaller groups or individual sessions should be considered at this time), consider viability of continuing with scheduled competition)
  • Red– Team must stop regular practice and competition for a minimum of 7 days and reassess metrics until improved.

Special Emphasis for Parents/Guardians:
A family’s role in maintaining safety guidelines for themselves and others cannot be overstated.
Do not attend practices, walk-throughs, workouts, or any team functions.
Be prepared with masks/face coverings for all members of your family if permitted to attend events.
Strongly consider whether or not out of state or optional travel is necessary, particularly to and from those states identified at the time with having a current spread of the virus.

Screening ALL entering facility for practice or competition:
This includes Players, Coaches, Administrators, Officials, Scorekeepers, Clock keepers, Statisticians, Media, Parents/Guardians, Maintenance, Athletic Trainers, Fans.

Mass Team Testing for COVID-19:
This requirement will not be one size fits all, but we are in the process of finalizing our plan for required competition testing.

Isolation and Quarantine:
Team travel will be expected to transport symptomatic S/A via rental vehicle, coach, or family member.
Home competition we will designate an isolation area for any visiting symptomatic S/A.

Concessions:
It will be required that all items sold in the concession stand be pre-packaged before the sale.  Pre-packaged can be items purchased like chips, bottled soft drinks, candy bars, etc.  These types of items would be considered the safest and easiest to handle.

Social Distancing and Masks required for all parties in lines, working in the concession stand, etc.

Sanitation should be readily accessible to the concession stand.

General Guidelines:
Communicate in advance with incoming schools as well as officials regarding procedures and guidelines, including equipment to be provided and equipment opponent is expected to supply. 

Incorporate public address announcements and signage regarding health guidelines and best practices. 

No hugging, shaking hands for encouragement or greetings.

Limit team benches to essential individuals participating.

Maintain social distancing of 6 feet between substitutes, officials, game workers, and/or team bench areas. 

No community water stations/coolers will be permitted.  Each member of the game day experience should have their own drink container.  Food should never be shared.

Postponing handshake lines for players, officials, game-day workers, or coaches before or after competitions.

Pre-game, quarter, halftime, time-outs, and post-game meetings shall utilize social distance principles.

Game balls should regularly and routinely be cleaned during competitions and during breaks.  Switching out game balls for sanitation is recommend and should be managed efficiently.
