HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Belfry locks down No. 2 seed with win over Pike Central

Belfry’s Dre Young returned the opening kickoff back 77 yards for a touchdown and the Pirates went on to hammer Pike County Central, 42-7, in a district matchup played at Haywood Stadium on Friday night.

Running back Caden Woolum had a pair of rushing touchdowns (38 and 13 yards), returned a punt for another (50 yards), and hauled in a TD pass (29 yards) from quarterback Chase Varney.

Cayden Varney capped the scoring for the Pirates, now 5-4, with a 58-yard run early in the second half.

Pike Central, now 3-6, avoided being shutout when Luke Varney scored on a one yard run late in the final period.

Both teams close out the regular season on Friday night. The Hawks journey to Paintsville (4-5) while the Pirates play at Johnson Central (7-2). Both games will kick at 7:30 p.m.
