HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hornets fall short in opener against Mountain Lions

Phelps was just one big play away from coming from behind against Pineville at Marty Casey Stadium on Friday night.

The Hornets’ upset bid of the Mountain Lions fell just short in a hard-fought 26-20 loss.

Cainan Land had a big night with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and then he hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from first year starting quarterback Steven Layne. Layne passed for 51 yards and ran for 48 yards.

Running back Bryson Layne added  a rushing touchdown for the Hornets. Bryson Locklear had 50 yards on 14 carries.

Phelps will look to bounce back on Friday when they face East Ridge (1-0) in the Pike County Bowl at Belfry.
