Phelps fell behind early on to Sayre and the Hornets dropped a 53-24 road game played at Kentucky Christian University of Friday night.
Quarterback Dominick Francis rushed 21 times for 206 yards and one touchdown as the Hornets fell to 1-5. He also took a pitch and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. He broke several tackles before racing down the sideline.
Running back Seth Mayhorn finished with 115 yards and one score on 19 rushes. He hualed in three passes for 32 yards.
Christian Land led the defense with 10 tackles and Landon Dotson added seven.
Spartan quarter Cole Pennington, son of former Marshall and NFL star Chad Pennington, passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns.
Phelps is scheduled to host Hazard (0-5) on Oct. 23, pending the lifting of COVID restrictions. Kickoff from Marty Casey Stadium in 7:30 p.m.
