HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Late TD run, PAT help Eagles escape Cougars

Johnson Central running back Zack McCoart scored on a short touchdown run with just 37 seconds remaining, and placekicker Sawyer Crum booted the game-winning PAT as the Golden Eagles slipped past Letcher Central, 35-34, in a district showdown at Jim Matney Field on Friday night.

McCoart ran for 193 yards and two scores as the Golden Eagles moved to 7-2. Mason Lawson had 132 yards and scored three touchdowns on 16 rushing attempts.

Letcher Central quarterback Jonah Little ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 135 yards in the loss.

Koby Johnson and Isaac Matthew added a rushing touchdown each. Brett Smith returned a kickoff back for a score.

Johnson Central will close out the regular season at home on Friday night, hosting the Belfry Pirates (5-4). The Cougars (6-3) welcome Bourbon County (2-7). Both games will kick at 7:30 p.m.
