HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Messer earns Player of the Week honors

Martin County running back Brock Messer had a big night in helping lead the Cardinals to a home win over East Ridge at The Rock on Friday night.

He rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns and returned a kickoff back for a sixth.

His effort has earned him the Mountain Top Sports/Buffalo Wild Wings Player of the Week award.

Messer edged out Shelby Valley Wildcat running back Jayden Newsome was an unstoppable force, running for 207 yards and five touchdowns as Valley improved to 4-2. 

Special honorable mention include:

Shelby Valley quarterback Russ Osborne passed for 396 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Osborne ran for a score.

Betsy Layne running back Reece Music carried 22 times for 262 yards and four scores in the Bobcats’ road win.

Letcher Central quarterback Jonah Little passed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 111 yards and three scores on 13 rushing attempts.

Johnson Central running back Zack McCoart ran 13 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns while Chase Price added 187 yards and two scores on 15 rushing attempts in the Golden Eagles win.

Man running back Jim Green rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 carries. He had scoring runs of 60, 57, and 28 yards twice.

Honorable mention:

Shelby Valley receiver Brady Bentley hauled in 10 catches for 184 yards and a score. 

Johnson Central running back Mason Lawson was the third running back with 100-plus yards in the win. He carried 14 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Pikeville quarterback Isaac Duty passed for 151 yards and two scores, completing 12-of-16 passes in a big win over Madison Central. He rushed for a TD.

Lawrence County running back Dylan Ferguson ran for 91 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns, including the game-winner on a one-yard run late in the third period as the Bulldogs edged Boyd County.

Tug Valley running back Adam Slone ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 5-1. Quarterback Elijah Fluty added a rushing touchdown and passed for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Belfry running back Dre Young ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns as the Pirates improved to 4-3. Caden Woolum added 73 yards and a pair of touchdown runs on just five attempts.

Floyd Central quarterback Max Martin passed for 119 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for another.

Shelby Valley receiver Brady Bentley hauled in 10 catches for 184 yards and a score.

East Ridge quarterback Dylan Burdine passed for 268 yards and ran for a touchdown.
