HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Newsome garners Player of Week honors

Shelby Valley running back Jayden Newsome ran for 194 yards and five touchdowns in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind homecoming district win over Martin County.

His effort has earned him the Buffalo Wild Wings Player of the Week honors.

He edged out East Ridge quarterback Dylan Burdine who had a big night, passing for 278 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 157 yards and one score.

Here is this week’s special honorable mention:

East Ridge running back Isaiah Adkins had two rushing touchdowns and hauled in five passes for 74 yards and three scores.

Letcher Central quarterback Jonah Little continued his outstanding play as he rushed for 264 yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries. He passed for 110 yards and one score, a 21-yard pass Keaston Branham.

Magoffin County quarterback Aden Barnett rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns and passed for another.

Lawrence County quarterback Talan Pollock ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries. He also passed for another score.

Mingo Central running back Dylan Vance ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns and hauled in a TD pass.

Pikeville quarterback Isaac Duty passed for 271 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another.

Johnson Central running back Zack McCoart ran for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 13 rushing attempts.

Martin County running back Madden Miller ran for 104 yards and four touchdowns.

Honorable mention:

East Ridge receiver Zack Mason caught seven passes for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Logan quarterback Drew Berry passed for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Magoffin County running back Ben Lafferty finished with 148 yards and one score on 16 rushes.

Mingo Central quarterback Chris Ross passed for 130 yards and three touchdown passes.

Prestonsburg running back Ethan Jarvis ran for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 carries. 

Pikeville running back Blake Birchfield had 100 yards on the ground and two rushing scores.

Pikeville receiver Wade Hensley had four catches for 164 yards. His TD receptions covered 80 and 58 yards.

Shelby Valley quarterback Russ Osborne passed for 150 yards and tossed a TD pass.

Man quarterback Jacob Brumfield ran for three touchdowns and threw for another.
