HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hawks turn away Hornets late to escape with 13-12 win

Pike County Central’s defense stopped Magoffin County inside the five-yard line on four consecutive plays to earn a thrilling 13-12 win in a game played at the Hawks Nest on Friday night.

Running back Matt Anderson carried 27 times for 172 yards and one score, a 37-yard run just two minutes into the game to give Central a 7-0 lead.

Isaac Blankenship added a four-yard TD rush late in the third period.

Magoffin County, playing without starting quarterback and the team’s leading rusher Aden Barnett, got a pair of rushing touchdowns from backup Brock Montgomery on runs of two and 71 yards.

The Hawks, now 3-5, will play at Belfry (4-4) in a district battle for second place on Friday night. Kickoff from Haywood Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. The Hornets (3-5) will travel to Clay County (5-3) on Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
